Well, here we are again, our Christmas letter comes out well past Christmas! As usual, we spent all of the Christmas season filling orders for Linda’s cookie business. It was another great year for Linda’s Gourmet Cookies; just as we have since starting the business in 2004, we had another year of double-digit growth. We grew in both corporate and personal orders. Our new Lemon Drop cookie was a big success and, as always, Gooey Butter Squares, ToDieFor Bars , and Truffles were extremely popular.

Peter is well into his second year at Georgetown. His focus is on Economics, with a heavy dose of Philosophy, Gender Studies, and Debate. His Debate activities take him traveling about the country multiple times a month. So far this year they have been to Boston, Atlanta, Winston-Salem, Lexington, and Los Angeles.

There was no major travel for Linda and Bill this year. This was the year of home repair and remodeling. It all started in the spring when a major leak in the boiler heating system was soaking the ceiling in the dining room. We had seen the symptoms of this for some time and had all variety of repair experts out to work on it - including carpenters, roofers and gutter specialists - without any success. It finally turned out to be a leaking pipe in our steam heat boiler system. That was repaired and then the boiler itself broke down and needed to be replaced. With that behind us, Linda embarked on major remodeling and redecorating of the house.

The main bathroom in our house is the original bathroom. When the house was built in 1917, this was the only bathroom in the house and there were seven people that lived here and shared it. I can’t even imagine the traffic jams in the hall outside the bathroom at the start of the day!

Linda had it completely remodeled down to the bare plumbing, wires and studs. It was a good thing we did it because we discovered several plumbing and electrical problems that were in immanent need of repair. She then had the bathroom put back together with beautiful subway tile, marble, and a large soaking tub. Not to stop there she did major redecorating of the hall, dining room and living room. We should be set for the next xx (you fill in the blank) years.

Remember that boiler we had replaced? Well one repair leads to another, and the steam pipes in the basement started to leak. They were insulated and so we had to have the insulation removed before we could even find where the leaks were. There were several leaks but they were relatively easy to plug up. We’ll hope they hold.

With such and active year, 2012 is going to be a year of relaxation. It’s time to identify fun cruises to go on. Next year at this time you will be reading about our travels to exotic places, interesting exploits, and enjoyment of delicious food.

More Alaska

We did and saw many interesting thing on our Alaskan cruise. We saw killer whales, humpback whales, sharks, sea lions, and bald eagles. We visited nearly 20 glaciers. I learned more about glaciers than I thought I ever would. I learned how they are formed, why they are blue, why their runoff is milky white and that some of them are advancing and some are retreating. (At some glaciers they had their highest snowfall on record last winter.)

We also met a lot of nice people. We met couples from New Zealand, Liverpool in the U K, and of course from Phoenix, Denver, Florida, California, Kansas, and many other spots in the U S.

I hadn’t been on a cruise in several years and was surprised at how the cruise companies operate. What I remembered from before was that you pay for the cruise, then everything is provided and you sit back and enjoy. Well, on this cruise it was similar except as soon as we got on the ship they started trying to sell us things. The first thing to purchase was a welcome drink. Then there was perfume, jewelry, furs, “better” food, souvenirs, health products and on and on. It became very annoying and several of the people we met on board felt the same way. Additionally, the cruise companies have set up tourist oriented shops in the cities they stop at and direct you to those spots when you get off. We always tried to find the establishments that were owned and operated by local people. The locals were always friendly, interesting and I highly recommend their shops.

Back from vacation

We are back from vacation! At this time of year ordering cookies and sending cookie gifts slows down. The main gifts people give at this time are “Get Well” gifts and “Thank You” gifts. So, we gave all of our associates vacation and closed for two weeks. The whole crew scattered around the country. We went to Alaska. We took a cruise through the inside passage going from Vancouver to Anchorage in 7 days. Along the way we stopped at Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway.

Alaska is an interesting place and a lot different than we are used to. For one thing the night was total darkness for only 2 or 3 hours per night. The people were wonderful, so friendly and they love the out-of-doors. We saw lots of wild life, interesting glaciers, and enjoyed nature. An Alaskan cruise is one of those “must do” things you need to put on your list to experience before you die.

Parties and Cookies for Parties

In my last note to you I mentioned I was too busy to blog and then went on to say that the spring cookie gift season was slower than the winter. So, you may ask, "Why were you too busy if spring is the slow season?" That's a good question. The answer is parties. We have been doing lots of parties. That is both trays of cookies for other people's business and personal parties and cookie parties that we conducted.

For cookie party trays, as always, the big hit has been our unique lemon bar. It's flavor is slightly sweet and very tart. Right now we are only delivering them locally, but I am still looking for a way to safely deliver them nationally.

The other party activity we are doing is children and adult cookie parties. At these parties we do a demonstration of cookie making, give baking tips, and have lots and lots of cookies to sample and take home. The difference between the children's and adult's cookie parties is that the kids "get their hands dirty" inventing and baking their own cookie. Missing in Action - Spring Activities and Blogging

You haven't heard from me in some time. Between my son's baseball season and the spring cookie season I haven't figured out this blogging yet. But let me try again. Of course cookie gifts are not as busy in the spring as during the winter holiday season. In the spring we have Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day and this weekend Father's Day, but those are spread out and don't attract the attention of Christmas.

Now summer is here, and it's time to prepare for the winter holidays. To keep doing all this you've got to love cookies.

New Chocolate Cookie

Oh, I forgot to tell you, we have a new cookie on our menu. One of the requests we constantly get is to have more chocolate cookies, and I will admit we've been short on chocolate offerings. So, in answer these requests I went about developing a chocolate cookie. You know my preference- a cookie with a good bite, definite flavor, real ingredients and no preservatives. After several months’ work and many tests I have one worthy of Linda's Gourmet Cookies. I call it the Double Chocolate Delight. I guess I went overboard on the chocolate and added chocolate to chocolate. However, the flavor is delicious. It's a chocolate cookie made with rich cocoa. Then, to double it up, I decided to dump our special blend of chocolate chips into it. So, now you have a chocolate cookie filled with chocolate chips.

For me this was like giving birth to a child. It took some time and effort, but you love the result.

Wonderful Gifts

One of the things I like most about baking cookies is seeing people really enjoy them and give them as gifts to others. I know it borders on bragging but I just had to share this letter about some gifts that were sent out.

Linda, Everyone has been telling me how good the cookies are. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I now know how good they are. Thank you for the gift.

It is really a very professional package. You have a great presentation and of course the great tasting cookies.

One of the guys told me he ate 1/2 the cookies (30) in a day and his wife had to freeze the rest so he would not eat them. Another had company who started to eat them and then she had to hide the rest for herself. Now I know why.

New Cookies; Butter Pecan Perfection, Chocolate Chip Meringues

We have two new cookies in time for the holiday season.

Most of our cookies have nuts in them. One of my favorite nuts is the pecan. It is sweet with a distinctive flavor but mild and not as sharp as walnuts. Nuts add body, flavor, and texture. So our two new cookies have pecans in them.

The Butter Pecan Perfection
This new cookie has a rich brown sugar cookie base topped with butter pecan and extra nuts. It has a rich buttery flavor and is crisp and smooth. If you like butter pecan you should try this cookie.

The Chocolate Chip Pecan Meringue
You may have noticed that we don't make a chocolate chip cookie. Very early in my cookie career I decided we wouldn't make a chocolate chip cookie. Everyone loves them but everyone has their favorite (often the one their mother made) and they all are different. So, it's impossible to please very many with one chocolate chip cookie recipe. The Chocolate Chip Pecan Meringue is my answer to the chocolate chip cookie. It isn't a chocolate chip cookie but it does have chocolate chips and nuts. The chocolate chips and nuts are held together by a light meringue. This is really a different type of cookie and worth a try.

New Cookies From Gluten Free Flour

I have just started baking some new cookies made from gluten free, wheat free flour for those of you on restricted diets.

I first got into gluten free products because of my husband's special diet, but was reluctant to offer them for sale because the taste was different than our other cookies. However, at the request of one of the doctors, I started to work on improving them. Now we have been successful at making them taste to same as our other cookies. Even in those famous "taste tests" (we had people try them) everyone said the cookies from gluten free flour tasted the same as our other cookies.

So, we now have four cookies made from gluten free, wheat free flour. They are

A Busy Summer

Well, it has been a busy summer. My son is now back in school ( he just started high school.) We have added two new cookies to our products (more about those another time.) And now we are in full production for the holiday season. Labor Day started it all. Now there is Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and many more holidays. For these we will be sending out thousands of gifts and delivering many trays of cookies for parties. We ship nationwide so, if you were thinking of sending one of our gifts or using our refreshments, get you request in early before we are fully booked.

But back to my report on our hike of the Inca Trail. As I said it was a four day hike of 26 miles and was the most rigorous thing I have ever done. We were hiking at elevations of 9000 ft to 14000 ft. Every day was continuous climbing. From the time we left camp in to morning until the time we reached the next camp at night we were on the move and not at a slow pace. The first day was one of the easier days since it consisted of hiking gentle rises and drops. The second day was uphill most of the day. (And these aren’t gentle trails. These are steep stone steps.) The day culminated early in the afternoon, reaching “Dead Woman’s Pass” at 14000 feet. It was down hill from there.

The third day was downhill. That sounds easy but it was actually one of the hardest days. This was the day all the blisters appeared on our feet. The fourth day was short, and I was so exhausted by then I don’t remember much about it. Fortunately, we had a couple of days after that to tour Cusco and Lima and recover before we came home.

All in all the experience was great but it is good to relax and get back to enjoying cookies.

Vacation

You haven't heard from me lately. That is because we have been on vacation. We went to Peru to hike the Inca Trail. It was beautiful but very rigorous.

We hiked and camped out in the Andes at elevations from 10,000 to 14,000 ft. The air gets pretty thin up there. We spent the first three days there just getting acclimated to the elevation then we hiked and camped for the next four days.We hiked a total of 26 miles. Now, that doesn’t sound like much for four days hike, but it was mostly climbing to high passes and then descending so you don’t get very far in a day.Well back to the cookie ovens, more on the trip later.

National Science Olympiad

You may have noticed that my blog was not very active during the month of May. That is because at the end of May my son competed in the National Science Olympiad for his middle school. The competition was held at the University of Indiana in Bloomington, so it was a great experience for all of the students. He participated in 4 events finishing 15th and 16th in the nation in two of them and 6th in the nation in Dynamic Planet and 8th in the nation in Food Science (the subject which we taught.) Needless to say we were very busy and very proud.

Gordon Parks Fifth Grade Graduation

Gordon Parks Elementary School graduated another fifth grade class this week. It was another great year for the kids. It is wonderful to see the progress they make. All of the students are so pleasant and polite it is fun to be around them. Just before graduation the fifth grade class made a trip to Washington, D. C. This school is making a big difference in a lot of lives.

We Are Now In Full Production at Gordon Parks Elementary School

We have just completed our first batches of cookies that we are now baking at Gordon Parks Elementary School. We baked Pecan Crisps, Gooey Butter Squares, and Marner's Biscotti. They turned out great and we gave the first batch to the teachers and staff. They loved them.

With orders for cookies way up this year over last, this gives us a way to greatly increase production.

I'm Working On Some New Cookies

Our most popular cookies by far are the Gooey Butter Squares. People want these 2 to 1 over any of our other cookies. I think it is because this cookie is so unique. No one else makes it. It's smooth; it's creamy; it's sweet; and yet it is still firm.

So I decided to try to make some variations on this cookie. I'm starting with a chocolate version and a lemon version. However, this is going to take some work and some experimentation. I don't want the Chocolate Gooey Butter Square just to taste like another brownie, but I would like the lemon version to have the tart flavor of our Lemon Squares.

I'll post our progress from time to time.

Hermits

Well, I just found a great recipe for hermit cookies. I recently had a friend ask if we baked hermits. I had completely forgotten about hermits and hadn't tasted any since I was a kid. We tested many recipes and finally found one we loved. So now we are going to offer this cookie to people who remember them and ask for them.

What are hermits? They are a light cookie with a mild spice taste, raisins, and nuts. So far everyone who has sampled our recipe says, "I remember these. They're wonderful! They remind me of when I was a kid."

We will see if anyone wants to buy these cookies.

They are a community based charter school in Kansas City, Missouri. Gordon Parks Elementary School is a k-5 elementary school and they "PROVIDE an academically enriched curriculum featuring first-hand experiences, active learning, and an added measure of art, music and physical education for children living in the urban core of Kansas City, Missouri."

When you visit the school and see the joy in the children you know they are doing an outstanding job. If you are looking for a way to give back to the community Gordon Parks Elementary School is a great avenue.
